1. Brunswick Golf Club

City: Brunswick, ME
Category: Golf
Telephone: (207) 725-8224
Address: 165 River Rd.

Description: Brunswick has two interesting clubs that reflect the community. This is one of them, established in 1901 for use by Bowdoin College students. Now everybody seems to be enjoying its 18 holes on an average weekend. The course is divided into two nine-hole loops, the first original, the second added in 1970, and it’s usually busy, so calling ahead is almost mandatory. There are all the major amenities, from club rental to eats to instruction, but you’ll have to dress properly to enjoy them (no Bowdoin T-shirts—or tees of any kind—tank tops or cutoffs, etc). Open from April through mid-November. Eighteen holes in midsummer will set you back $40.

2. Mere Creek Golf Course

City: Brunswick, ME
Category: Golf
Telephone: (207) 721-9995
Address: 9 Merriconeag Lane

Description: On the grounds of the local navy base, this course was for years called the Brunswick Naval Air Station Golf Club, but the Feds thought the name might be scaring away potential business. The nine holes here have been open to the public for years, but many people—especially visitors and newcomers to the area—aren’t aware of it. It’s a fine, open course, not too far from the runways of the navy’s airport, and you get to rub shoulders with military personnel. From a full shop to a driving range to a snack bar and lounge, all the amenities are here. Club and car rentals are available. Tee times are a good idea on busy summer weekends. Because the BNAS is slated to close, it’s a good idea to call ahead, anyway.
