Description: Not the clothier for kitties that its name implies, Catwear is a warm, fuzzy company that makes women’s clothing out of fleece. These are cardigans and vests and pullovers that have more in common with couture than with fleece jackets as we’ve known them. Nice stuff, and nice people, too.

Description: The shelves full of new books are only part of the charm at this second-floor shop in the heart of “K’port.” The owners are the kind of genial, knowledgeable proprietors every good bookstore should have—and they’ve tucked a zillion thoughtfully selected titles into their new Route 1 space. You’re sure to find that perfect vacation book here, as well as signed books, a fine selection of Maine titles, and some children’s classics. And remember, “Friends don’t let friends buy books at chainstores.”

Description: Ken Cantro’s jewelry is handcrafted in pewter, sterling, and gold plate, and it picks up themes from both Maine and the natural world. Truly classic stuff that transcends age and style—it’s liked by everyone, from Goth kids to grandmothers. There are Lovell stores in Freeport, Portland, Portsmouth, and then this place, one of the better spots to spend your dollars in Dock Square.

Description: Mast Cove got its start in the early 1980s with a dozen artists, and it has since evolved into the biggest of the many galleries in the Kennebunks. In fact, it claims to be the largest privately owned group gallery in all of Maine now, representing more than 100 artists. From Robert Eric Moore to DeWitt Hardy, these galleries have a lot of good stuff inside.
