Health Care - Kansas City, Missouri

Health Care - Health Care And Wellness

When moving to a new city, even more important than locating the nearest ice-cream parlor is finding the closest hospital. In Kansas City, chances are you’ll have one practically in your backyard.

Even more good news is that many of our hospitals are nationally known for specialties like cardiac care, cancer diagnostics and treatment, and even kidney transplants. Chalk it up to the fact that Kansas City is home to three medical schools: the University of Kansas Hospital, known for its outstanding research programs; the University of Missouri–Kansas City, offering a unique six-year program combining B.A. and M.D. degrees; and the University of Health Sciences, with a focus on osteopathy. Practitioners of chiropractic have the highly respected Cleveland Chiropractic College. While we’re busy training the best physicians and health care workers in the world, they’re busy falling in love with this town. After graduation they tend to plant their comfortable white shoes right here.

We’re also making medical breakthroughs that can help eliminate disease, speed the recovery process, and improve the patient’s quality of life. For instance, our neurosurgeons were the first in the region to operate on tumors and lesions near the brainstem that were once thought to be inoperable. Heart surgeons performed the first endoscopic vein removal from the leg in the Midwest.

And our KU Hospital was one of the first hospitals to perform deep-brain stimulation surgery to help control tremors associated with Parkinson’s disease. It has performed more of these surgeries than any other hospital in the world.

Kansas City is fast becoming a world leader in the exciting field of life sciences with the opening of the Stowers Institute for Medical Research. This $200 million facility is devoted to finding cures to gene-related diseases like cancer and Alzheimer’s. Find out more about this biomedical research center in this chapter’s Close-up.

As for immediate care, we’ll start our rounds by covering the area’s three largest health care organizations with multiple facilities and then follow up with individual medical centers and other health care providers. And we promise, no “cutting-edge” jokes.
