Description: A striking dressed-limestone mansion in the middle of Durham, the Greystone’s grand scale and architectural details recall the Bull City’s tobacco heyday, when this house was considered a modest addition to the neighborhood. Finished in 1910, it was built for James Edward Stagg, great nephew of Washington Duke, and Mary Washington Lyon Stagg. It is a rare example of the period, having survived the urban renewal of the 1960s that leveled many of Durham’s turn-of-the-20th-century mansions. The carpenters who worked on Duke Chapel also created the intricate interior woodwork at Greystone. Set on six acres, the house has six rooms, three with fireplaces and three that open onto the wide second-floor veranda. A separate carriage house apartment has two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen, and a dining area. It is wheelchair accessible. All rooms include a hot breakfast buffet, transportation service, high-speed Internet, and DVDs.
