Description: The Durham Arts Council works with the Durham Arts Guild to schedule exhibits in the three galleries in the council’s historic building. The organizations issue a call for artists annually and judge works submitted, which are usually two-dimensional or small three-dimensional pieces. Artists need not be from North Carolina, but most are.

Description: One of a spate of former warehouse renovations in downtown Durham, Golden Belt is a former textile mill turned into a multiuse complex. Along with loft apartments, and retail space are 35 artists’ studios, a store featuring contemporary arts and crafts, and exhibition and event spaces that host art and performance events. It’s a popular stop on Durham art walks. Exhibitions have included a student-and-mentor photography show of portraits of adults with mental illness, a mixed-media examination of the effect President Obama’s election has had on perceptions of race, and sketches from a professor’s recent trip to Papua New Guinea. Golden Belt works with arts organizations in the community on an artist-in-residence program and show schedules.

Description: The Jewish Heritage Foundation of North Carolina operates the Rosenzweig Gallery, an exhibition space for Jewish art and artifacts inside Judea Reform Congregation. The gallery collects and exhibits Jewish artifacts from across the state. History exhibitions examine the ebb and flow of Jewish communities in towns throughout North Carolina. The gallery presents the art of Jewish artists in exhibits that change every month or two.

Description: After 36 years in Chapel Hill, Somerhill Gallery moved to a dazzling new 9,600-square-foot space in the Venable Center, one of downtown Durham’s renovated tobacco warehouse projects. The gallery is lit by more than 40 skylights and provides a sleek setting for the paintings, sculptures, mixed-media, photography, glass, ceramics, and jewelry on display. Somerhill represents more than 275 artists, regional and national, whose styles range from representative to abstract.

Description: Best known for its enchanting tropical butterfly house with its 30-foot conservatory, the Museum of Life + Science also devotes acres of land to other forms of life, thriving and extinct. The museum, supported by Durham County and the state of North Carolina, aims its educational programs at children, but adults never cease to learn something when they tag along. From watching the keepers feed poison dart frogs to traipsing through a wooded trail with dinosaur replicas on either side, the museum offers a wide variety of ways to experience the natural world.
