Description: Johnnie Haynes opened the first Johnnie’s Charcoal Broiler in Sept 1971 at Military Avenue and Britton Road. He started in the restaurant business in 1946 on the West Coast and had 18 years experience before starting his own restaurant. His first drive-in had 12 stalls for cars where car hops delivered food. Inside, were 12 booths which could seat 48. . Expansion started in 1977 and today there are eleven Johnnie’s located in Oklahoma City, Edmond, Tulsa, Norman, Stillwater, and Broken Arrow. Johnnie’s employs more than 500 people in these communities.The food at Johnnie’s is cooked over real charcoal. His hamburgers are made with meat that is ground fresh daily. With more than 30,000 hamburgers being served each week, one knows there has to be favorites. People order the #9 Cheese Theta more often than any other burger. It is topped with Johnnie’s special sauce, a house made hickory sauce. Also popular is the #4 Caesar Burger served with Caesar dressing. The dressing is made with a secret family recipe and to make sure that recipe stays a secret, co-owner David Haynes makes a batch of the dressing himself every day.By slicing real onions and battering them, homemade onion rings are made fresh here every day as well. Five hundred pounds of onions are used for each location. French fries are made from real potatoes which have been cut and then made ready to fry. Tea is freshly brewed each day and guests can buy it by the cup or gallon.Johnnie’s continues to be voted “Best Burger” by the locals who have come to appreciate the quality taste and freshness of their burgers.
