Description: The Owasso Public School District is the seventh largest in Oklahoma and covers approximately 72 square miles. The student population is growing at about 4 percent per year—with about 9,000 students now. Presently there are eight elementary schools, centers for grades six through eight, a mid-high school, high school, and RAM Academy, an alternative school. In addition to traditional classroom instructors, the district has a large Special Services division and seven full-time registered nurses.The district has a superb performing arts center, with an auditorium seating 1,500 people, and brand-new tennis facilities. More classrooms have recently been added to the high school, along with a commons area, two state-of-the-art science labs, and two art studios. A new athletics facility and wellness center was scheduled to open in late 2009.The high school offers 13 AP classes. Owasso students score above the national average on the ACT test, and over 80 percent of high school graduates pursue further education. In addition to core subjects, students participate in vocal music, speech and debate, theater, and band—the Pride of Owasso. (To hear the band, go to www.prideofowasso.com.) Sports offered at the schools include baseball, basketball, cross-country, football, golf, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, track, volleyball, wrestling, and Special Olympics.
