Description: Brookings is a favorite with retirees and so is the Chetco Inn, which sits on a hill above town. The building used to be a hotel; it was built in 1915 and retains many of its lovely original furnishings and features, including the fireplace in the living room and a staircase that sweeps up to the second floor (there’s also an elevator). The Chetco Inn has 35 private or partially private units; they will provide you housekeeping and linen services, three meals each day, emergency phones by the bed and in the bathroom, and private telephones. You will also receive twenty-four-hour medical supervision, with a medical director, two RNs, and a LVN on staff. The backyard is a favorite gathering place for horseshoes and croquet or just for chatting peacefully in the sun.

Description: The maintenance of independence is the mission of the folks at Macklyn House, a licensed assisted-living facility. Macklyn house provides basic assisted-living services, but it also has a twenty-four-hour staff trained to provide nursing, personal, and other care for more complex problems such as confusion. The studio and one-bedroom apartments are private (you can lock the doors), but they have emergency call systems for extra security. Three meals are served each day; laundry facilities are provided; and transportation can be arranged. Pets are welcomed, too.
