Description: Maybe it’s the legendary grey skies or the communal energy of a coastal village, but it seems that live theater is a booming force in North Bend, Coos Bay, Bandon, and Coquille. A good example is Little Theatre on the Bay. This ambitious outfit has been mounting full-scale musicals as well as serious drama for decades. Examples of their shows include Paint Your Wagon and Of Mice and Men.

Description: Here in the sprawl of a renovated plywood mill along US 101 is a lively yet perfectly safe gambling parlor operated by the Coquille tribe. You can stop by every night and play slots, bingo, blackjack, and poker. There is also live entertainment six nights a week with rock, country and western, and oldies to dance to while the house bags up your winnings. There is free RV parking.

Description: This old saloon is a bit rough around the edges but is the real McCoy as a country tavern in downtown Coos Bay. Live country music fills the saloon on Friday and Saturday nights with no cover charge. It also offers free pool on Monday 5 p.m. to close.

Description: Another great resource that’s accessible without your laptop is Hipfish (www.hipfishmonthly.com), an arts and culture monthly that covers the nightlife events from Astoria down to Lincoln City. You can snap up this free, very comprehensive, and well-produced tabloid at most stores and shops. Located en route to the Coast from downtown Coos Bay, Genevieve’s has family-style dining as well as live music and DJs spinning CDs on Friday and Saturday.

Description: As well as presenting adult drama, this lively group also mounts shows with teenage thespians involved in Alternative Youth Activities. The theater has three different venue locations: Genevieve’s, 1088 Newmark Ave.; Coos Bay Children’s Theater at the Pony Village Mall, 1611 Virginia Ave.; and North Bend Egyptian Theatre, 229 S. Broadway, Coos Bay.

Description: Fondly known as “Lloyd’s of Bandon,” this venerable pub has been the scene of lots of live music brought in from Portland and other larger scenes. The bands play every other Friday and Saturday from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. The restaurant side menu is available in the lounge side. Best bet is classic cheeseburger and fries.

Description: Probably the most southern nightlife venue on the Oregon Coast, the Redwood Theater, an old movie house actually constructed with redwood, shows films and presents live music concerts. The Friends of Music schedule five concerts of classical chamber music on Sunday afternoons in spring and fall.
