I received a letter from an old neighbor who had attended Bond Hill Elementary in the late 30's /early 40's and who had Googled "Bond Hill Elementry" to try to see what turned up. She didn't find much from anyone back then but came across a posting from Phil Centers who had attended the school in the late sixties. She copied the posting and sent it to me the other day. Phil recalled our 6th grade teacher, Mrs. Stoffregen, and what a wonderful teacher and inspiration she had been. He also inquirred about classmates and mentioned a couple of names. The posting was from June 09 and it's 2 yrs later now. I'm one of the classmates he asked about, Terry Huber. I, too, have fond mememories of the year we spent with Ruth Stoffregen and was also inspired to be a teacher. It gave me chills to be able to continue the poem Phil recited and to know exactly where my copy of "One Hundred and One Famous Poems". I've still have my spiral "Poetry Notebook" that we were required to keep as well. Mrs. Stoffregen explained that Eddie Richenbacher (sp?) was able to remain calm and sane while stranded days at sea as he recalled every childhood poem, song, or rhyme he could think of. I was compelled to be able to also save myself with poetry if in fact ever some day I was in a precarious position and needed to keep my wits about me just as Eddie had.
So Phil Centers, Phil Charles, Kerry Young or anyone else who might want to reminisce about Bond Hill days, please respond.
Terry, I came across this posting. You may not remember me, but I stalked you for years in elementary school! I have reconnected with many of our old 6th grade class and have started a group on facebook. Phil, Kerry, and several others are members. If you are facebook active, just do a search on bond hill elementary under groups. If not, send me an email and I will update you on all that I know about.
This is Phil Centers. It is so nice to find this posting from you, which I came across this evening while searching for information on Mrs. Stoffregen, which Chris Ideker was doing as well apparently just a day or two ago.
I realize it has been eight months since you posted the above, and I don't know that you check this site or will receive notification that someone responded to your posting. However, if you do, and would email me at dcenters@gmail.com, I would like to catch up with some stories about Kerry, Phil, etc. that are really not appropriate for a public forum. In any case one way or another I hope that you will find Chris's "Bond Hill Elementary" group on Facebook, and reconnect with those old friends who have also found this group.
Sincerely,
Phil
