Getting Around the Gatekeepers

Posted 08-05-2013 at 10:59 AM by Fortoggie

My buddy and I have coffee every morning at a fast food restaurant. We meet there because it's one mile from his place and one mile from my place and at 9:30 am, it's never crowded and we can solve the world's problems, at a leisurely pace.
But the middle aged manager there is a woman who understands that she is a gatekeeper and she decides who she will allow to enter the gate. Now the lady seems nice enough but like so many, she takes seriously her ability to control other peoples lifes.
For some reason she doesn't take kindly to an attractive young black lady who works for her. The young girl [ about 19 or 20 ] seems to do everything right and treats the customers nicely but the gatekeeper, cut her hours, right before her vacation, cut the hours so much, that she didn't have the money to do anything.
The gatekeepers all around the country are often hard to get past. They themselves have very limited power and they usually use their power to mess with other peoples lifes. Foremen and first line supervisors are out there by the tens of thousands and they are often hard to deal with, most do not give much thought to what happens to another when they cut their hours, lay them off are fire them.
So if you are a new hire into days job market, you should be aware of this possible obstacle and give your best though as to how to get past the gatekeeper. Good luck!

I might add that the banker is a gatekeeper of a sort and it's makes a lot of difference when you find a gatekeeper to unlock the vault for you.
If you are young and still in school, you have to figure out a way to get around the professor who also acts as a gatekeeper. In this case it's best to knuckle down and do the work, even though you may not like the professor or the subject. Here and there in life you will meet some door openers, people who delight in opening the door for you and then show you the way. Look for them!

Back to my coffee restaurant. On tue. mornings several ," white shirts" show up and they sit around the table with the shift managers and hold a pow-wow.
Now you can be sure that none of the regular workers think that this meeting is in their behalf. Nobody at the confab is asking how can we allocate a little more money to our help?
Rather the attitude is; where can we cut some hours and still meet our customers expectations. If there is any money to spread around, the white shirts want it spread their way.
No wonder the average worker is so low in morale.
