Denver Allergy Season Has Arrived

Posted 03-21-2017 at 09:34 AM by NorthDenverGirl

As I sit here with red itchy eyes I can tell you that Denver Spring Allergy Season has arrived. This year it may be earlier than you have experienced in other years because of our super dry weather and early blooms. I look out the window now and see trees blooming everywhere, the grass greening up (a little) and pieces of pollen flying through the air and I know for sure this is not conjunctivitis this is the yearly spring itch!

Denver Allergy Symptoms

So as you can see (no pun intended) mine is clearly itchy eyes when it comes to spring allergies and they drive me crazy but maybe yours is something else. Here are some of the most common allergy symptoms in Colorado.

Itchy Nose
Itchy Eyes
Itchy Throat
Congestion
Dry Cough
Sneezing
Foggy Head
Yep, a boatload of fun isn’t it. In my job, I can’t lock myself up in the house with the AC on all day (some days I wish I could) but there are other things we can do to get some relief from common allergies in Colorado.

Relief From Your Allergy Symptoms

Shower as needed – If you have been outside for a long period of time on a particularly bad allergy day jump in the shower and wash up good.
Allergy Eye Drops – These things are my lifesaver in allergy season. In fact, I am off to Walgreens after I finish writing this!
Nasal Wash or Neti Pot – You can buy these at your local Walgreens, CVS, Right Aid and even Target. They take a little bit of getting used to but they can help you wash the pollen out of your nasal cavities. Be sure to follow the directions!
Wear Sunglasses – This can help stop pollen and other things floating around in the air from getting into your eyes.
Use the AC – If it is a really bad day close up the windows and turn the AC on. Be sure to change out your AC filters too.
Start Your Preventative Medicine – If you take allergy meds start sooner rather than later, your body needs time to let it build up in your system, speaking from experience here because I never remember this and then expect meds to work straight away.
Vacuum More Often – This is especially true if you have carpet and pets or young kids. Pollen can be carried in easily and then linger in your home while you start itching and sneezing.
Hot Tea – If you have the tickly throat, hot tea can help relieve the symptoms a little.
Local Honey – Many sufferers have had good luck with local honey. There is some research out there that shows taking in the local pollens through the honey can help build immunity. Thanks Erin for reminding me!
You can also visit your Dr to get tested for allergens and see what help they can offer up. If you are wondering what might be causing the allergies check out this website.

If you have some other suggestions that can help fight the Denver pollen counts, I would love to hear them, feel free to leave a comment below and help a fellow allergy sufferer out!
