Coronavirus: the Turn

Posted 02-25-2020 at 01:23 PM by Blondebaerde

The Pledge was in China...

...at the Turn, it's now in Europe and the Middle East.

At this writing, WHO has now suggested the "world must prepare for pandemic", per BBC. They're trying, with questionable success, to slow it down in Lombardy and Milegro (northern Italy), though it may be marching south. Italian government had no comment about this four days ago; now it's lock down? In the West?

I have an opinion. From the previous:

"At this point, could turn into a full blown, escalating pandemic. Or, could turn more endemic, in a normal 'flu season' sort of way." Hard to say which it will be, which makes sense.

Milan and another town/region in Italy are either locked down or taking some actions. Carabinieri and military are deployed in one quarantine area.

So: what I'm not: a wacko, stampeder, prepper idiot. I am an IT executive, observer of the news, student of history, and understand how governments good and ill suppress news, probably to keep low-information types from looting the towns.

My view is no reason to panic...though it is concerning. Yes, the Army and National Guard and police could do the same to parts of the US. That's worst case, and is not a hard-core 'prepper' TEOTWAWKI situation: likely won't lose power, or other utilities, though mobility could be slowed or stopped awhile.

Personally, I work from home and don't get out terribly much, always with a good supply of non-perishable in my pantry. Just ordered month's supply of coffee, if need to stay in (yep, I did).

We'll see what happens. I am not a prognosticator, either, and can't really tell from the talking heads the true severity. China doesn't seem to be fooling around with this situation, though like all police states as letting out bad news somehow reflects badly on "the State" vs. the needs of "the People." ...Resulting in a dearth of news when needed most. Outcomes:

- Pandemic, X% mortality rate, we all catch it. Limited quarantines worldwide are ineffective. Year or two, it's burned through. Economic downturn globally.

- Gradually dies down to background noise, some get it and others just don't. Burns through as above.

- a Nothing Burger, goes to background in a month and that's that. If there's a flu shot at some point, I may go get one.
