Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken.
Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.
In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Easy Listening Music Does Need To Make A Comeback

For the past few weeks on YouTube, this writer has found a few posts dedicated to airchecks from various radio stations through the years. A good many of them, specifically, are from the decades of the 1960s, '70s, and '80s.
Part of that era didn't just include the rock-n-roll, country, pop, and other formats common to what I call the Golden Age of radio, but there's another format that's basically been swept under the rug. The catch, here, is that the easy listening format has not exactly been forgotten by some folks. I have to admit, I used to listen to that format in my junior high years, and there was just something soothing about it in its day. Don't ask me why. It was an alternative to the popular genres and formats which resonated most with my former classmates. Just think: Soaring strings. Orchestral tones. Easy instrumental arrangements. Once in a while, you might run into a singer. Usually, the easy listening format offers selections of popular songs with an orchestral-type arrangement, often by lesser-known musicians, and made to fit the soothing scheme. In many big cities, it was not unusual to find at least four such stations on your FM band at a given time.
Stations which used to play this format back in that era included the following:
KOAX-FM (105.3) - Dallas
KODA-FM (99.1) - Houston
KASE-FM (100.7) - Austin
KOOI-FM (106.5) - Tyler/Longview
KJYO-FM (102.7) - Oklahoma City
KQZY-FM (also on 105.3 after KOAX) - Dallas
KPLX-FM (99.5) - Fort Worth
KYND-FM (92.5) - Houston
KMEZ-FM (100.3) - Dallas
KBEZ-FM (92.9) - Tulsa
So far, that's all I can tell you from what I know (Remember, I live here in the Great Southwest, so the market knowledge with this type of format is limited).
Makes you glad to be on City-Data, where it's great to be alive.
Now, some people are wishing for this format to make a comeback on terrestrial radio. I like the idea, but will it be profitable if it played on a commercial frequency? There's already such playing on SiriusXM, Channel 69, with the thing called Escape. Fitting, to say the least. Your only real hope for the terrestrials already exists in at least three places. You'll find the easy listening format on: (1) KLUX-FM (89.5) in Corpus Christi, TX;
(2) KNCT-FM (91.3) in Killeen, TX (which, ironically, serves both the Killeen/Waco and Austin markets); and (3) KAHM-FM (102.1) in Prescott, Arizona. The third station has no streamlining to anywhere in the world, but the former two do.
If nothing else, I've just shown you where Mantovani went on your FM dial. There aren't many, but that music is out there.
