No agent, no upfront costs, no waiting on the off-chance that a reputable traditional publishing house might pick up the book.

All an author need do is write the book, get it beta read, make appropriate changes, get it properly edited and proofread (this will cost some money unless said author has an in-house editor/proofreader),
