Richardson..( My luck I would be there 2 weeks and end up in Iraq..)
I'm sure the Army would tell you that you'd be stationed @ Ft. Rich, and you might even fly over it and the way to Iraq, but I wouldn't expect it to happen (no matter what a recruiter is willing to tell you). I also wouldn't expect it even though the enlistment contract even said Ft. Rich. Why? Because there's a clause (actually federal law) that allows the military to move personnel (i.e. their duty station) based upon "the needs" of the military. In 25 years of service, I've seen this as well as had it happen to me. I was to be stationed in California when I first joined, and the needs of the military got me stationed in Hawaii. And let me tell you, I was pissed. Just kidding. I felt lucky considering how bad it could have been and the way I saw it go for others.

I think Rance's comments on the Alaska Guard would be a more prudent decision about who to join if you wanted to be stationed in Alaska. It wouldn't necessarily mean that you wouldn't end up in Iraq, but it would guarantee where you were stationed when you were not deployed. I think the Alaska Guard, both Army and Air, are some fine units. I've worked with both sides of the house.

I'm guessing you're thinking of joining hoping they (the military) would pay for the move? If that's the case, joining the Guard wouldn't help you in that regard.

Hope you find this info helpful.
