A great article I read. It gives great information on the seasons and the best times to visit Alaska.

the best time to visit alaska is when you just show up.
all 2 1/2 seasons are something to see and experience.

We returned in May and loved it. Still some snow and not too many tourists. We also went back in February for a Fur Rendevous. Loved it too. I am going back in May next year.

Definitely the time to go IMO.
The day-light hours of the days are already long, so you have light late at night and beginning again early in the morning for driving, while there aren't too many tourists around, can find motel rooms, and the rates probably less than peak times.
