Nome seemed like it had much more community spirit that included everyone in it. Nome has more of cosmopolitian feel to it, if a bush place can have that. The way the town is laid out, it's business district, etc. It's kinda hard for me to put into words. I included a link to the Nome Nugget newspaper. Take a few minutes and skim through the past 5 or 6 issues. That'll give you a better idea.
The housing market is tight. However this is the time of year to make a move if you're going to. Gold mining is winding down for the season and rentals will start to loosen up.
Recreational opportunities abound. There are three roads that lead out of Nome. That opens up tons of areas to explore. You could hop onto your atv and take a ride out to Pilgrim Hot Springs if ya wanted to.
If you want a beer or ten, you can walk into any bar in Nome and have some. If you want a beer in Barrow, you need to sign up at the alcohol collection point with a permit you must acquire with the city and wait for your beer to come in.
I'd move to Nome, I've never been to Barrow, but I've been to Nome a few times and had a blast. I have a lot of friends there.
OK. If Nome has more of a community spirit, then what sort of "spirit" does Barrow have?
thanks everybody. I need your input and you are helping us out
To be brutally honest Barrow has an old sad drunken spirit. Even though you can't buy an adult beverage in a saloon it always seemed like everyone was drunk.
Of course I was a police officer there so my view might be a bit jaded.
Barrow is starting to sound horrible. A "sad drunken spirit" you say. I had no idea that was how folks would characterize Barrow.
Wow. I was leaning toward Barrow (because Nome was starting to sound too youthful even though into lots of recreation). Not sure now ..
What about finding good, quality friends (not really into drinking; but I am not opposed to going to bars)? I had an idea the character of the people might be better in Barrow (due to strong Eskimo culture). But that doesn't match with "sad drunken spirit".
I guess I thought Nome might be more "transient" for lack of a better word.
Nome has a strong Eskimo Culture, too. You'll find this in all towns and villages across Alaska.
