I believe that's a German Wirehaired Pointer, which is a bird dog. Talk about an odd couple.

Glitch... I couldn't help but listen to the Barred Owl calls... anything like this??

ML: ML Audio 63003: Barred Owl

then this one sounds like the Owls that use to visit me near the Mississippi river near Ferryville Wisconsin back in heavy woods... I've never got to see them ... only shadows.. amazing aren't they?

ML: ML Audio 125371: Barred Owl

That is great web site. Thanks for sharing.

Boy, talk about a case of mistaken identity. After listening to the songs of the Barred and Boreal Owl, I have come to the conclusion that it is neither.

What I heard that one time he sung for me was this:

ML: ML Audio 120234: Northern Saw-whet Owl

He only sang for about a minute or two, but it was exactly like the audio file above. Like I said in an earlier post, it reminded me of some kind of "alarm", like the clock radio alarm on my nightstand, but nothing I had heard before. Which is why I was becoming concerned. It took me awhile to notice that it was Peppe "singing" because it was so loud I had a hard time locating the source. I was not expecting a three ounce bird to be able to produce so much volume.

That makes Peppe a Northern Saw-Whet Owl.

Northern Saw-whet Owl - Aegolius acadicus - Information, Pictures, Sounds

He is a little north of his depicted range, but everything else they describe about him fits. Length 17 to 21.9cm (6.7-8.6"); Wingspan 45.9 to 56.3cm (18.1-22.2"); Weight 75-110g (2.6-3.9oz).

Gees, first I thought he was a Barred Owl because of his coloration and his eyes. Then I thought he must be a Boreal Owl because of his size and range. Now, because of his song, I am certain he is a Northern Saw-Whet Owl.

I had read up on the Northern Saw-Whet Owl before, and considered it as a possibility for Peppe, until I read this:

Quote:
The Northern Saw-whet Owl vocalises during the breeding season only (usually between March and May). They are silent at other times of the year.
Since this is December, I dismissed the Saw-Whet Owl.

That's the cutest damn thing I've seen in a long while.

We have several local owls in the canyon behind us that are quite nonplussed when you are wandering just beneath them in the trees. I love their call every night- but I will say those little Screech Owl's call scares the bejeezus out of me, waking me from a deep sleep in a bit of a blurry terror at what is being killed so close by! They hang out in the palm tree next to the bedroom.

Glad you like the site... I spent about 2 hours in that site when I first read your post. That does sound like an alarm ... maybe it thinks your DVD player is his mate LOL...... have a great Sunday evening... I'm so tire I've had to correct almost every thing I've been typing.

I think either he was just happy to be warm, or he was thanking me for all the mice and saying goodbye. I have not seen Peppe since he sang last Thursday.

If he makes another appearance, I will revive the thread. Otherwise, I wish him well.

I guess I have a good excuse to go out and buy another digital camera now.
