buffalo bore does hardcast loads for 45-70 and many other calibers including handguns.

although when dealing with those coastal browns I vote for the M1 tank that was posted earlier and people are a lot more polite when you pull up in a tank.

Use the weapon that you can hit a moving target with. The 45-70 18" short barrel is a good backup to a 454 Alaskan Ruger IMO. Kinda like a hand cannon.

The single best firearm for stopping bear, or anything else that moves, is the Atchisson Assault Shotgun, or AA-12. In full auto it fires 300 rounds per minute, or 5 rounds per second.

I'd like to thank everyone for their advice. I went with the Remington, but ya'll gave me food for thought for my next purchase when I might have a little more to spend. Thanks again.

That's a good choice. Make sure you get a good sling to carry it with. Make sure it's always within hands reach. If, and that's a big IF a bear actually attacks you'll have scant seconds to react. Now go practice with it.

Instead of the .880 I got the .870 pump action super magnum. What a fun little shotgun this is! Lots of info and safety videos available for it on youtube.

BTW, shout out to the helpful folks at Great Northern Guns in Anchorage on Tudor. They spent about an hour with me and they patiently answered every question this first timer asked. Price was about $20 more than I found at WalMart. But the service and info was worth way more than that.

The Remington 870 and the Mossberg 500 are perhaps the two most commonly purchased pump shotguns on the market. I own both.

My Remington 870 is configured to be my bird gun, with a 28" barrel and modified choke. My Mossberg 500 is configured to be my camp gun, with an 18.5" rifled barrel and extended tube magazine.

Good choice. I have the mossberg 500 but I think you have a better gun. I got mine because I found a good deal used.

That is better in almost every way than a handgun. The only way it might be worse is that there is a better chance that you won't have it available when you need it.

On the other hand, you often won't need it.

I agree with many here in that you will almost never need something like that. I usually don't carry a gun and only do so if I'm going in an area where I know there is a good chance to be bears. It's a calculated risk.

Like Rance said, if it's your time to go it won't matter anyway. On the other hand I won't jump in front of a train assuming that it's not my time to go. I'll carry a gun if I'm going to spend time by salmon streams or moose kills. Otherwise I won't

Good choice with a good deal of power and vestal shotgun. If you find slugs heavy in the recoil area check out the Knoxx SpecOps Recoil Reducing Stocks for Remington 870, you can check them out on youtube.
