I really don't think it matters what you carry. When it's your time to go, your gonna go.

Just long enough to laugh for awhile then he'll take off again.

I'm an honesty and sincerity, NO. It will not stop a bear. It's all about bullet weight, construction, composition and velocity. They do not currently make a 9mm for bear defense. And they probably never will.

If some of the guns cost too much get a short pump shotgun. That's what Starlite used and that's actually the best bear protection. Professional bear guards generally carry Rem 870s with 18-20 inch barrels. That's about the best there is when loaded with good slugs. I picked up my mossberg 500 for I thing about 150 used.

Oh yeah, a 9mm will stop a bear... May take a few days before it dies, but you won't be around to see it happen!

I would most often be in a situation where I only have a hand gun.

There is hard-cast ammo available for most caliber handguns. I have seen some for the .45ACP, 9mm, 40mm, .45, .454 Casull, .500 Alaskan. .45-70, etc.

If for whatever reason you can only carry a handgun, buy some cheaper ammo to practice shooting, and the best hard-cast ammo you can afford for bear defense. But always fire a few rounds of the hard-cast ammo to make sure that the gun is accurate with it. The cheap ammo is just for practicing at the range until you become proficient with the gun. Also, it would not hurt to have pepper spray as a backup. I just don't carry pepper spray since I carry more than one gun when hunting, berry picking, etc.

For those who carry a .45-70 rifle, there is a company in Alaska that loads hard-cast ammo for it. I bought a couple of boxes of it (the box is made of some bright green plastic, and has a belt loop). I don't remember who loads this ammo.
