LOL There are 2 cities within 100 miles of me with higher populations. LA county at last report i remember hearing was about 15 million. Santa ana which starts a few blocks from me is close to 500K population alone!
The most amazing thing to me from seeing pictures of lakes and rivers in Alaska is that they are missing the bait and tackle shops and liquor stores that are on or next to every lake i have ever seen in Cali! You people are so blessed!

Someone once made the comment about Anchorage: "It's as if someone plopped Santa Ana, California down in the middle of the wilderness". I always thought that was pretty accurate. When I lived in Anchorage in the mid-90's, the city looked like "anywhere USA", what with modern office towers, chain restaurants, and big box stores. But you only had to drive for about 10 minutes to be in the wilderness.
No wonder about half the population of Alaska lives in just one metro area.

I don't think we're as bad as Santa Ana! More like Dubuque or Fargo. A little slower and definitely nicer.

Curious. I wonder where they are getting their information.

Alaska - 686,293 (July 1, 2008, est.)

Anchorage - 279,243 (July 1, 2008, est.)
Juneau - 30,988 (includes the entire borough, July 1, 2008, est.)
Fairbanks - 34,540 (July 1, 2007, est.)
Bethel - 6,431 (July 1, 2007, est.)

As far as Anchorage being "Anywhere USA", I am not aware of any other US city with a population of more than a quarter million that has more than 50 grizzlies, more than 400 black bears, more than 1,200 moose, and at least two salmon-bearing creeks within their city limits. Certainly not in Santa Anna, CA.

Yeah, these statistics don't tell the whole story. Fairbanks has only ~35,000 within the city limits, but caters to the ~100,000 in the Fairbanks-North Star Borough. Many live just outside the city limits; this makes Fairbanks BIGGER than these statistics show.
