Have a speedy and safe flight! The goodbyes are counterproductive especially with son #2, because he would be Iraq whether you are in Tennessee or Alaska...it just literally sucks, but the reunion will be wonderful!

Oh and now you have no room for crap, here I thought you only had issues with the 'stuff'

Dang Granny - you have a good memory! I deserved that!

I'm taking the usual carry-on stuff...uh...crap....uh necessary items, as well as one checked baggage. SO is mailing more stuff up this week, so at least I'll have the clothes I'll need for work and play up there.

Seriously, thanks for all the suggestions and well-wishes everyone.

Juneaubound - Safe travels and enjoy the beginning of your voyage! It's a trip of self-discovery just as much as it is miles Many here have been through it, what you called moving from the familiar to the unfamiliar, I think. Please keep posting to let others hear what the real deal is when you take the risk
But most of all ENJOY!

Well I made it - arrived in Juneau at 9am yesterday morning. The weather was rainy, foggy and about 20 degrees warmer than it was in TN. I made a joke with a fellow passenger that our checked luggage was probably down in Mexico by now (which was only funny until the conveyor belt stopped running and my trunk was a no-show) Sure enough it had missed my flight and was scheduled to arrive on the next incoming from Seattle a couple of hours later.

Yesterday was a busy day - eating good but overpriced breakfasts, buying good but overpriced groceries, visitng with one colleague and his wife (who are also from TN), renting a uhaul to move a borrowed living set and bedroom set into the condo I am sharing with another colleague, visiting the glacier (it's even more beautiful in winter, which is my favorite time of year because everything in nature is so quiet).

My colleague talked with her landlord yesterday and it's not looking good for me to take over the place when she leaves in a month. I've never lived in a town that is so unfriendly towards pets, and my sweet Jamie-dog is gonna be a PIA when it comes to finding us a decent place to live. I may end up at that extended stay hotel that I was originally planning on, by the end of the month anyway when colleague moves on.

So how does it all feel right now? Honestly not so good.

I own a house down in TN that I like but am trying to sell. I am staying in a strange condo, in a strange town, with a strange lady (ie. a stranger - not that she's strange ), surrounded by stuff that isn't mine. Will probably not buy a house for a while because there are just too many unknowns to this little adventure right now. Bottom line is feeling a little lost. OK - a lot lost.

Picked up some ***-traks yesterday at a nice outdoor store at the mall (I hate shopping, but LOVE outdoor stores), and we're going for a hike today (can't remember the name of the trail). Hopefully that will help to settle me down. Being outdoors usually does. Work starts tomorrow.

Hope work is going well for you!!!

I have SO been there For me, there is nothing worse than being out of my comfort zone............until I realized that I can be "anyone" I want to be. I had never moved far from home before, and it took coming to Alaska to shed some of the "roles" that being in our hometown kept me locked into. Which is also why trips home can be painful, because I'm not the person who left there last year anymore....but those folks still think I am.

When we first arrived in Wasilla, I kept saying I wanted to rent forever. You know, NO taxes, NO burdens of upkeep, blah, blah. That lasted about 6 months and I went nuts.......now we have our own place.

Everything will be slower for you right now because everything is new! Where to get gas or pick up a quick coffee or find parking, or the bathroom at work... It will all come !

Sounds like moving overload....You have a month there in the condo with the 'strange stuff' to unwind from all the anticipation of the move. You may be able to network with some people you work with and meet, to find a house to rent with your fur baby. Things seem to work out in the end. Have fun on your hike, try to 'clear' your mind,...and absorb some of what you anticipated... Cleats are a good thing

Landlords are unfriendly towards pets because of a few rotten pet owners. They will often cause thousands of $$$ of damage in just a few months. So many landlords overreact by banning them altogether. What landlords need to remember is that responsible pet owners are usually longer term tenants. The risk is in determining the responsible ones from the irresponsible.

Whew..you have been busy!! I too think you're on overload and it's normal making a big change in our lives. You mentioned you like your home in TN. Instead of selling it, can you possibly lease it out? Doing so may give you a better feel of security in that you've not given up everything of your "old" life. . Might not be a bad idea to just hang onto it until you are absolutely sure. I, like most people, hate being out of my comfort zone and we are all basically creatures of habit.

Get out and hike as you mentioned and check out the town. You've done alot and need to just relax some. I think you'll do fine.
