I don't know much about Schenectady, but I agree there are nice houses/neighborhoods right near SUNY. The area right off fuller rd betw Washington and western is also nice, I don't know the name of this section. Where do you live now? I came from downstate and while taxes within city of albany are higher than colonie they are still comparable or lower than where I moved from.
I live in colonie, not far from SUNY. I agree with what everyone has said. I think you could find a 2 bedroom home for actually much less than $250 here. There seems to be a lot of inventory of older, small homes for under 200 and bigger, newer homes for over 350 with not much in between. I live in an area that the planes do fly over- more than anything it depends how low they are. It is not too bad by me but 1/2 mile down the road it is significantly louder due to the planes' altitude. I'd be careful not to be closer than 1.5 miles or so from the airport for this reason. You also have to be wary of through streets in colonie, some seemingly quaint neighborhoods are actually quite busy due to people trying to avoid the main roads.
Personally, if I were married with no kids and working at SUNY, I'd live in the Buckingham Pond area. It's a great neighborhood and your commute would be virtually...non-existent. Schenectady, in my opinion, has less to offer than Albany (although you could probably get a nicer house for your money).

There are many others too. Low taxes on this one. I have never been in the house myself and I do not know the people but it looks beautiful and is relatively new.
I grew up in that neighborhood (on Red Fox Dr.) and it is an easy commute to SUNY. Mostly starter homes built in the late 60s through mid 70s, but safe and convenient area.

The Buckingham pond area is excellent. The Melrose area just off of Washington is great and a little less expensive. We have a small (1500 sq. ft.) bungalow in a pretty residential neighborhood originally built in the 1920's. Literally a mile from SUNY and you can get a nice house in the $150K range
