I used to live there but wouldn't walk around at night and I'm 6ft4 250 lb black belt combat vet-if u shoot in self-defense in NY most probaly you go to prison even if u r being robbed and beaten at the time.
What is that suppose to mean? I don't think Albany is that bad really and I'm sure there are some rough neighborhoods like Arbor Hill or some of the South End, but it doesn't seem like things are out of control.
Hahahaha, I think this is supposed to mean that Albany is prone to crime because of its considerable minority population. Yes, it is a racist argument if that's what you're worried about. I'm not going to make any judgements - not good, not bad, just is.
A lot of areas of Albany are decent enough... but as a technician who works off-hours you will NOT find me wandering around Albany outside of the bar area (even though I dont drink or do bars)... inside of a few block area outside my building we have had stabbings, and recently a coworker was robbed at gunpoint in the Times Union Center parking lot while retrieving his car close to midnight.
As a Long Islander, I've been to Albany twice and my sister-in-law went to school there for 4 years. I would not consider anywhere near downtown being a desirable place to live. The locals are NASTY. The looks of disdain on their faces when you walk by have to be seen to be believed. I remember trying to drive across an intersection when a high school dance was letting out..the kids there, both white and black, are mean spirited and always looking for a fight. My sister in law had 2 guy friends beaten to a pulp requiring hospital stays just walking home from a bar by a carload of "gangsta" thugs...for no reason...maybe because they were white walking with 2 attractive white girls?
Every college town has it's "townies" that don't look to get along with outsiders or college kids, but in Albany, they are belligerent and nasty.
Most of the negative posts on this thread seem to come from really bitter/racist people. I live in downtown Albany, near Lark St and it is wonderful! Also you really don't need a car, as an earlier poster claimed. It's an inconvenience in many places.
Here Are some tips for which areas to stay out of, (I keep track of the news lol) Anyway this advice is based on Just 2013 so here are some places to stay out of from worst to greatest: Arbor Hill #1 Ghetto It has a lot of gang activity at night time, same with washington park, not any fun places to walk around or do stuff though, South End is not a very nice place to be either. Quail Street, i remember a couple months ago to girls got shot there for no particular reason. Washington Avenue (Downtown part) it is probably the Place in albany where people are mugged the most, Central Avenue People have been shot there twice this year, one was a drive-by shooting and to people were injured not dead though, and i forgot the other reason that happened but people got shot there to. South Pearl Near Times union center is probably the safest but once this year someone got stabbed it was an argument thing) Most of the time when people are attacked it is ususally from a person they know so try to only talk to friendly people don't wander around at night time alone or talk to people who are shady looking (Just incase) Oh yeah i forgot also on central ave there was a drug dealer caught this year. So Best of luck to you, you probably already have a home now but this is worth a shot but have fun in albany i hope you like it!!!
