I've been in the Madrid VIPS before (on c/ Fuencarral, I believe) and they weren't your typical chain restaurant. More like a combination of a store (I remember magazines being sold) and restaurant.
I went to the same VIPS in Madrid and never made the connection. Hmmm.

VIPS had 2 locations that I remember- the one on east Central and another (established later) at the Coronado Mall, which opened in the early 70s.
Yes VIPS was THEplace to “cruise” on the mid- to late- 60s in Albuquerque. And the burgers were great - they had a special sauce that I remember as being Thousand Island.

I doubt it was as simple as that but it did make their Big Boys unique to be sure.
