I really don't think so. As others have said, it is much more difficult for a developed country to split. There is a certain momentum that is just too hard to stop after a certain while. Also, geographically speaking, the US really can't split. Past the Appalachian Mountains and the Rocky Mountains, the US is immensely flat for its size, and is far away from aggressors who may want it to split (Like Russia has with its neighbors, or China, or India, or Brazil). The only possible threat is SOuthwest Succession, but it's highly unlikely this will happen as the US is rapidly integrating the area into general Americana. Before now, the region was sparsely populated (with the notable exception of California, which has always received immigrants from the Anglo East), and due to this, Mexican immigrants can create new "Mexicos" in the US. Now that the region is developing rapidly, the US is investing heavily there, which will dump MANY Anglos in the region, thus "diffusing" some of the aggression.
The US' geographic position is probably its best case against succession.
No. Developed countries never break up. A few exceptions were countries that were amalgams of several different "countries" previously, who got put together artificially and then re-separated. (E.g., Czech and Slovakia)
Czechoslovakia was one united nation for a LONG time. Uzbekistan was a part of the Russian Empire for over a hundred years, and then part of the Soviet Union. Scotland pushed for and won their own parliament, which is a bigger concession than the USSA would grant any state. It does happen.
ABSOLUTELY NOT! The vast majority of the inhabitants of the United States of America speak a form of the English language. Most so called: "Americans" share many common beliefs, ideas and values. There are overwhelming financial and historical reasons to preclude a breakup of the United States. Simply put it's in very few people's own interest to see for example an independent Vermont or Texas.

Who said anything about a violent break up? Latvia broke off of the USSR without a shot being fired, as did Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and others. Every secessionist movement today wants to do it peacefully.
Sorry, but we in the North West are tired of being ruled over by a bunch of redneck senators and congressmen from Alabama, Mississippi etc. At the same token, they don't like us much either. America is NOT A COUNTRY in the sense that we are one people. Compare someone in Washington state to someone from Alabama: they have a different English dialect, different religion (Bible Belt vs Unchurched Belt) different sports (NASCAR vs Sounders FC) different food, different politics etc etc. We are a distinctly different people.
I mean, what folks seem to forget is that if and when America breaks up...IT WILL STILL BE HERE! All secession means is that we will no longer be forced to share a central government with those whom do not understand or agree with our values. We will still be friendly neighbors, trading partners, military allies etc. Only difference is Washington, Oregon and Northern California along with maybe British Columbia will make our own rules and no longer will Redneckistan be forced to share our government.
It will take something big for it to happen, but sooner or later, America will go the way of the USSR and peacefully break apart. Let the South Run itself instead of pushing its war on drugs, religious fanaticism, xenophobia and warmongering on the NorthWest. At the same time, we wont push our secularism, socially liberal and green/hippie ideas on them.
Let's face it: we can't get along. And what do couples do when they can't get along? They get a divorce. With all the wealth and resources in the North West we'll be way better of than many countries, like Japan and Tiawan, both of which are smaller than Cascadia will be.
And to all those going on about how Americans will never let that happen, I present the song so many Soviet school children learned young:
Quote:
United forever in friendship and labour,
Our mighty republics will ever endure.
The Great Soviet Union will live through the ages.
The dream of a people their fortress secure.
Long live our Soviet motherland,
Built by the people's mighty hand.
Long live our people, united and free.
Strong in our friendship tried by fire.
Long may our crimson flag inspire,
Shining in glory for all men to see.
Just as the Soviet people wised up and realized it was over and went their separate ways, the American people will someday do the same. What, do you REALLY THINK the US will last forever? Romans thought the same thing.
Theologically it is said that we will be come a one world govt and religion so--- but could there be civil war. it could get ugly as food shortages and an unbalanced economy might push a few over the edge, but we are normally docile, until attacked or feel we are being attacked.

EXTRA heaping of insane, here...
I usually just smile and nod politely at asinine ramblings such as this above.

If we could just ditch the South I think the rest of America would be fine. It really is the land of the insane bible thumper.
