Well Colombia is one of the cheapest destinations available from Canada despite the entry tax for Canadians, maybe go with your Guatemalan passport to bypass it. Just found return flights for one week at the end of August Toronto-Bogota-Toronto for $640 canadian dollars or 3 weeks Aug/Sep for $565 canadian if you're willing to connect in Dallas and Cancun.

Another option is if you find a really cheap ticket to Miami or the following Caribbean cities, you can then swap onto this new Colombian budget airline (Wingo), potentially doing 2 trips in one. Viva Colombia, Jet Blue and Spirit are also options from the US. Spirit flies direct into Armenia in the coffee region, my parents home city.

How are those Colombian budget airlines, Wingo and VivaColombia? I've read online and there are nightmare stories of cancelled flights and airlines refusing to return your money. Does this happen often?

VivaColombia was just bought by Irelandia (Ryanair), I think.

It happens but not as much as people say it does. In fact Viva has the second best track record for flights leaving on time (within 15 mins), on average 90% of flights according to recent statistics. The problem arises when you're in the remaining 10%, customer service is pretty **** poor. If you don't know how to use budget airlines you shouldn't use them, people don't understand that you need to check-in online, be very strict with baggage sizes/weight, if you're organised and know how to demand for what you want within the terms & conditions, budget airlines are fine. If you don't then you will incur surcharges and if things go really wrong - lose your money for not following up properly.

I've flown Viva six times, never an issue.

Good to hear. No offense but many people are pretty bad when it comes to reserving flights online. Fwiw ive flown with Sky Airlines (Chilean budget airline) several times and they are my favorite airline in the world. Flying with them is generally stress free, no delays, free drinks, cheapest prices in Latin America, etc. Love them

That's got Chile. Beaches, mountains, variable climates and most importantly political and economic stability.

Nah Chile lacks, cultural as well as ethnic diversity. It's a pretty homogenous country from North to South, it's also very Santiago-centric. 44% of the Chilean economy is concentrated in Santiago only.

Most other LatAm countries will struggle to see something of themselves represented in Chile. This is not the case with other countries in the region. Geographical diversity is Chile's strongest card but here again it lacks many important Latin American identifiers; tropics, Caribbean culture, mountain cultures and ancient Native American ruins.

I have to agree that while Chile looks like the complete LatAm country based on stability, it still lacks the full flavor of LatAm, even though it's diversified culturally a lot recently due to immigration and is more "Latino" now than in the past. Saying Chile is the complete LatAm country is like saying the UK is the complete European country, especially when it's residents eschew the European label in favor of describing themselves as "North Atlantic".

I would have to say the most complete LatAm countries are Mexico, Colombia and Brazil. All of these countries have elements that make them both Latino and Western. They have good economies, Afro, Indigenous and European influences, and offer cuisine that is to die for. The latter two are both South American and Caribbean/Atlantic nations that offer a lot of flavor.

I think a Colombian person can both relate to a Chilean or Argentinean as well as a Caribeno. Their accent/dialect is relatively the most neutral and they seem to have a well balanced culture that incorporates all of Latin America.

Mexico too but mostly because Mexico's media representation is so large in LatAm. Brazil for similar reasons that I listed for Colombia.

All of them are really diverse and vast in size climates, culture, etc...yet in a geographical/landscape point of view,I think Brazil and Colombia have lesser real cold mountains places or none "non tropical" ocean scenarios and Argentina totally lacks any "tropical beaches"...

Some diverse landscapes pics form down here (argieland)...yet like any really big country regarding size, even a sole province/state involves really different landscapes (sorry I'm new and i couldn't find the way to insert the pics):
