It did not matter if I planted flowers or veggies they were consumed rapidly. We tried for years on our acreage.
Where we lived at the base of the mountains just off the highway in the Hereford area was at some 4800', at bit cooler than downtown Fry Blvd and windier.
I was stationed at Fort Huachuca in 67-8 and lived there again for about 8 years until about 11 years ago when we relocated to a cooler climate in the middle of the state.
I fence my stuff and it grows just fine.
I DO have to fence it though. Not so much from Rabbits but from deer. In my neck of the woods we've got TONS of deer. There have been over 30 on my acre AT ONE TIME.

Apricots, figs, plums, plum-cots, apples, pears, pomegranates - all doing very well. We'll see about my Asian Pear and Guava (new this year). You are right though - you DO have to take some protective measures to protect your garden or orchard from the wildlife - PLENTY of that around.

Yes to the golf courses, and as far as hunting there is deer and javelina. Northern AZ has deer and elk.

As an FYI, here is the climate info specifics:

https://www.usclimatedata.com/climat...tates/usaz0214

As mentioned, pretty darned perfect - not too hot in the summer, very very mild in the winter.
Hard to complain about highs in the 60's in the winter and in the low 90's and upper 80's in the summer.
Almost exactly the same (averages within 1 degree) as my climate here in J-Six.

I'd put up a caution about biking. There are a lot of goat heads in desert areas, that cause a lot of flat tires. The other caution is about roads. If you just want to ride in the city, you're ok, but there are not that many paved rural roads. Most rural roads are dirt/dust/gravel,rocks. A mountain bike would probably be a better choice in that area.

But the climate is pretty great for year round living. Some homes in the area are at 5000 ft, which is even better.

Just take note of how close the border is, and check out the problems theyre having with illegals in southern NM, Alamagordo and Las Cruces.

I've not read anything about Sierra Vista being overrun by illegal immigrants. Does it being a military town maybe cut down on this some?
