Happiest U.S. States Pinned Down

Moderator cut: post link A new study found that a person's self-reported happiness matches up with objective measures of state-level happiness.
The results are based on an examination of two data sets, one that included personal reports of happiness for 1.3 million Americans and the other that included objective measures, such as how crowded that state is, air quality, home prices and other factors known to impact quality of life.
Click here to learn more about the survey and what it means.

I had read that people in more impoverished circumstances tend to be happier because they expect less, and have less fear about what life will throw at them next. They're already at the bottom so how much worse does it get? Seems that if Louisiana tops the charts, that must be true. I suppose if we sink deeper into economic turmoil we will be "happier" too.

Its funny.... at the bottom it remarks that scientists are POSITIVE they are correct besides Louisiana since they didnt go back to do another happy reading after Katrina. haha good stuff!!

Arizona was listed among the top 5 Happiest states in the country. Here is another link that is much easier to read.

Turns out, sunshine states really are happiest - Florida AP - MiamiHerald.com (http://www.miamiherald.com/news/florida/AP/story/1387051.html - broken link)

Seems odd that Louisiana would be the happiest with all the poverty there. And NY the most miserable with all that money and "culture". Maybe it has something to do with folks being crowded together as opposed to rural living. In any case, Laissez les bon temps roulez!

Based on the people I have met and my experiences, Arizona is anything but a happy state. The people seem uptight, arrogant and unfriendly. Not to mention they think they own the road. I used to live in Indiana, Michigan, and Virginia, and Arizona has the WORST people of any place I've lived and the people I've come across. That is a fact. No, I dont think AZ is a 'happy' place at all.

Makes perfect sense to me.
Arizona residents wake up every morning realizing they're not in Minnesota.
Would certainly make me happy.

I totally agree with you on that. It's far from being a "happy" state. Most of the folks here are arrogant, self-centered, uptight about everything, and are unfriendly. Not to mention, untrustworthy and dishonest (well, most of them, not all).

Compared to back home in Texas, people back home are friendlier and nicer. And I've lived in Arizona for 8 years now and experienced this everywhere in Arizona. Sorry, just voicing ones opinion.
