You all keep getting clipped by these winter systems dropping south. We had been plotting a quick weekend getaway down there, but have been waiting for better (warmer) weather that will soothe our souls in the midst of the relentless conditions up here. I saw a couple inches of snow possible for you and as much as 5 to 8 inches up near Springfield, MO? I actually would love to go to Hot Springs where it's a bit warmer, but that extra 3 hour drive is just too far for such a short trip.

I'm going to Georgia this coming week to see my mother who is ill, so I'll get a nice weather reprieve for a few days down there.

Just a heads up on a spring trip to hot springs. Oaklawn, the race track, is open 3 weeks later this year than ever before. ( May 4, being the last day) They will have the infield open starting in April and there are all kinds of family friendly attractions there. We take our grands to the infield every year and they have a ball. (Ages 3-9) The only thing I could recommend bringing is sun screen.

Also, several new hotels and restaurants in town, plus a great putt putt course is open at night starting spring break week. If you wait until summer,, then the lake attractions are in full swing.

There are numerous condo rentals available year round. This is really the best value, as you can prepare all your meals in the fully equipped kitchens and get a couple of bedrooms and baths. This makes makes everyone more comfortable and most condos have pools.

One more new thing, highway 70 is brand new and 5 lanes wide.

Hope you can come and enjoy!

started snowing here about an hour ago and we probably already have an inch or more: supposed to continue through the day, more than originally predicted it appears.

We had about an inch yesterday morning. It's still there since the temp remained well below freezing. Sitting at 6 degrees this morning.

Do the roads get bad quick out there in the mountains, Holly? When I was venturing through there on 7 and 74 a couple years back I remember thinking I wouldn't want to be driving those roads in any type of winter conditions. Do they treat them beforehand?

The county is very good about dropping salt beforehand but the highways can get icy if the conditions are bad enough. If it's just snow, they do remove it quickly, it's the ice that is the problem. They don't plow the side roads though so unless you have a truck, a few inches of snow can leave you stranded. We only have 4x4 trucks though since we're a couple miles off the pavement.

Roads are in good condition now and a lot of the snow melted by mid day yesterday even with the temps way below freezing. I guess the sun had a lot to do with the melting. I believe and as many of you know, we have lived here 11 years now, yesterday may have been the coldest day we have had. If no the coldest, very close. Today, though it is still in single digits right now, will get into the 30s and that sounds warm compared to the past 48 hours.

Not trying to re-ignite this debate, but this kind of weather down there supports at least a portion of Nita's previous contentions about NWA having at least some Midwestern characteristics. You all sit up there right near the Missouri and Kansas borders and this year especially seem to be getting a ton of Missouri/Kansas type winter weather, although I know the snows haven't been as big as they get. Still.....that's pretty freekin' cold for Arkansas. I know they rarely get that cold and snowy down Hot Springs/Little Rock way - same goes for the other deep south states. Definitely a slice of the Midwest - albeit not as prolonged or severe - when it comes to winter weather in NWA.

Very sad news today, a 22 year old girl from South Dakota has fallen and died at the Hawksbill Crag. Details aren't yet availble.
