So Duterte's policy of murdering thousands of suspected drug dealers and users is popular? As is his picking fights with the Catholic Church?

He's a populist. This is what happens when a populist gets elected. For well or ill. The people like him, the establishment wants him to stop spoiling things for them.

Yes he is popular because that is what he did in Davao City as Mayor. Everybody knew that if he was elected that it would happen, so when people were alarmed it surprised me. Even when he was mayor and vice-mayor it was a open secret in the country that it went on, it was even made into jokes actually.

The people were also fed up with the justice system in the Philippines because it is only efficient for those that have money. So the poor destitute rest of the country justice is fleeting. It is not unheard of that trials can take years even decades before there is a final judgement.

A lot regular people are Catholic but are tired about how then church tells many lawmakers how to vote on subjects such as divorce and reproductive issues. Such as there is divorce for Muslims under Sharia law, but for everybody else they are SOL. They have to try to get an a awannulment which can take $5-6k on average and 2-3 years to complete for a regular person, which for the average person is impossible. So that's why you see a lot of people that were married before, separated and never annulled, then go on to have another family later on in life. That is rampant across the country.
Also they still won't promote any type reproductive health classes so you have 12-15 year olds having babies in the slums. They also teach that using condoms and the pill is a sin.

FYI. My wife is from Davao City and her whole family still lives there in the area. She only came to the USA in 2012 and she is a die-hard Duterte fan but hates how he kowtows to China. Also what's funny is Duterte speaks better English than he does Tagalog. I have heard him numerous times speak English on morning shows in Davao and it's really good. While his Tagalog is laden with English and Bisaya words like he is very uncomfortable speaking it.

I think that Duterte is popular for some of the same reasons that Trump is popular with many people in the US. I.e., its not unusual for people to want a strong leader with authoritarian tendencies, as long as he appears to punish people that they are afraid of. However, one difference (I think) is that Duterte supposedly has personally killed at least one such person, while Trump has just talked about shooting someone on NYC's Fifth Avenue and not losing any votes for it.

.
Count President Duterte himself as part of that group. Having one annulled marriage and the break up of his second marriage and assumed office living with a girlfriend, he having chosen not to go through the "testi-lie" process of proving cause for divorce again and having everybody nod and wink when a doctor says "the cause" was a preexisting psychological incapacitation.

But of course the just over 6% Muslims are willing to fight. While the other 10% of Filipinos who are not at least nominally Catholic might or might not fall in line with the Catholic Bishops.

Philippines will never be a Garuda, stop it! Be contented of having Indonesia on it. It is Maharlika or Malaya (truliesia spoiled it by getting that name).

Haha we have long been free from Spain except the name which can easily be changed if needed. Communism is nil. The European Vatican is not the culprit nor the followers but the wrong execution of the values and interpretation of beliefs. Nothing to blame except ourselves. If others can, why not us, just give us time.
