if you actually kept up with the news, it'll be peaceful as long as the "agreement" from 31 years ago is still sort of loosely upheld.

of course that doesn't serve american interest. but I don't think the chinese cares what the US does with tw anymore. it's time to work on the rest of the world.

You’re leaving out that Xi is trying to impose his rewritten interpretation of the agreement which means Taiwan must be integrated under one country, two systems. Any sitting government in Taipei is going to reject that. That is not pretence for war, that is an unprovoked invasion if he tries something so insane.

Invading Taiwan would truly be insane.
Russia invaded Ukraine thinking it would be a 2-week conflict. Ukraine was a poor country who had 8 years to prepare for a war which was to be launched one mile from their border. And Russia cannot pull it off.

Taiwan is a wealthy, well armed country who has been preparing for war for 75 years. The war must be launched across a sea which is 1200 miles wide. The death toll for China would be staggering.

China is not going to invade. They are wondering how much support they would get and trying to gauge what penalties may be imposed in addition to losing several hundred thousand troops.

Why is China visit by Taiwan ex-leader so controversial?

Former Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou is visiting China, just as Taiwan's current president, Tsai Ing-wen, prepares to head to Latin America and the US. It is the first by a current or former Taiwanese leader since 1949. But Ma says he will not meet with high-ranking Chinese officials while there.

is it really controversial? it's pretty obvious to anyone that chinese and kmt want peace while the US and its puppets want war.

DW is German.
Below France24 put the visit as "to improve cross-Strait atmosphere."

Just listened to some Taiwan news at my neighbor's house - over 2/3 people there want peace.
Apparently, the enlistment age is now 16.
And everyone shall be armed with an AK-47(?)

Indeed. All the invasion narratives come from the western media. No one bothers to report on the other sources, perhaps due to lack of translators.
Worst still, those not of Chinese ancestry, not affected by the events unfolding, could barely hide their racist intent. If they can goad the two to war, there is a $3 trillion reserves, $870 billion, and a long list of assets to loot. Just like the good old 1900.

Yeah. That's not fair.
Actually everyone in the world hates China, not just people in Taiwan.
