Funny, but it would seem that independant thought is still as discouraged now in the Baptist realm as when I walked out of it some 31 years ago.
Pull the string and a pre-recorded verse is forthcoming, and I view their opinion as much as I do that of a doll with a string coming out of its back.

I wonder if this quote will be of assistance in a court of law when being tried for the murder of your child? "But your honor, It was in the bible!"

Quote:
God said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains that I will show you."

Do you think the same of people who quote other sources?

If I quote John Locke or Thomas Hobbes, do you also seem me as unoriginal and rigid in my thinking?

There is a huge difference in quoting reams of bible babble than quoting a one liner for emphasis.

But your point is not to debate, but to merely be a lump in the gravy, which you do well .

In any case, few verses from the Bible will actually stand alone. They have to be considered in context to find the real meanings.
My general response to the "context" argument:

Not having read it, it would be difficult to quote from it, unless it was something that has passed into the cultural lexicon, like that line about not being my brother's keeper.

Which I'm not.

But I have quoted a number of different people in the past, even Shakespeare.

Like, for instance, a description of you: "...full of sound and fury, signifying nothing".

Well, NO!! the people I have met who quote Locke or Hobbes do so correctly and in context. The same holds true for those special few who quote Samuel L. Clemens. (Samuel L. is definitely one of my culture heroes). It's the bible that attracts the lunatic fringe.
