But Catholics actually do venerate John the Baptist (mythological/historical character) as a Jesus-worshiping Saint.
Are Baptists and Southern Baptists even anything related to John the Baptist (other then wanting to do ONLY a full body immersion as they think was "originally and always" intended and "Southern" being a sub denomination of the other split on the issue of whether slave-owners could be "proper" Christian missionaries.)?
I know I've read that John the Baptist represented a god of water, a very ancient figure in middle eastern religions. If you think about it, it makes perfect sense. He's all about the water. For thousands of years rivers and bodies of water were thought to have their own gods, not just in the middle east of course. In Europe all the great rivers had their own gods or goddesses.
