Relocating in Atlanta advice... (Decatur: house, public school, live)

Hi! I have lived in Atlanta for about 2 years right on the border of Old 4th and Inman Park. I'm trying to scope out the best place for our family following this criteria:

1. Budge: 900 max rent
2. We would prefect a house
3. Work is in Inman Park. We would like the commute to be around 15 min. Rush hour will not be an issue since DH works at a restaurant.
4. We would like a good public school
5. I enjoy a good mix of suburban/urban
6. Do not need public transportation


We are kicking around Kirkwood and Decatur, but I'm having a hard time from distinguishing the bad from the good parts. They both seem to have pockets of bad areas. DH returns pretty late from work at night and I would like somewhere that I can feel safe being by myself with the kids late at night. THanks!!

In your price range, I don't think you will find a house in the good parts of Decatur. The better schools are in the city of Decatur which has its own school system, but the areas outside of the city limits still call themselves Decatur-- many of which are pretty dreadful, as are the schools.
