Er, City Council rolled back the bar hours in 2003. Ben Carter didn't come on the scene until 2006 and nothing was torn down until 2008.

The City Council didn't need an excuse to change bar hours. They extended them in the Village in the first place and had complete authority to change them, just like they do elsewhere in the city.

Local residents weren't objecting anyway. After the murders, stabbings, open drug dealing, mass cruising and trashing, etc., had been going on for a few years, folks were begging for relief. If there was any coordinated effort to bring down nightlife in that little area but it came from the rowdies, not the city.

And what's the furor about Atlanta needing 4 am bar hours? In most of our peer cities -- Boston, San Francisco, L.A., Denver, Philly -- last call is 2 am. Why is it that won't work here?

Because we don't have:

Boston - rich history
San Francisco - world class scenery and reputation
L.A. - beach, Hollywood, celebrities
Denver - mountains, recreation, skiing
Philly - 300 year old history

Atlanta was defined by its party district. It was known as a fun city. People came here to have fun. That was a big part of who we were.

That would be like L.A. closing down all of its beaches and saying "I don't see what the problem is, New York and Denver don't have great beaches and they are doing fine!"

Also, I don't recall much, if any, outcry from Buckhead residents about problems in the village. Most of that action happened when they were asleep, and there really aren't that many residences within earshot of the village anyway. I lived in Buckhead at the time, and I don't recall an outrcy. If anything, residents wanted the scene cleaned up and brought back to what it used to be, not eliminated entirely.

Well, if Atlanta was defined by 4 am closing hours for a few rundown blocks in Buckhead, it was high time to redefine.

If 4 am closing is such a big deal, why not simply lobby for later hours in Candler Park, Virginia-Highland, Inman Park, Cascade, Kirkwood, Castleberry Hill or Midtown? What's so special about Buckhead that makes it the only place suitable for late night carousing?

Surely our city doesn't hinge on that.

Ha, that's me all right. And stay off my lawn!

The fact is we got along okay both with 4 am and 2:30 am closing hours. The problem was stuff like multiple murders, stabbings, drug dealing and so forth. Even the mass cruising might have been manageable, although the trashing was unbelievable. If you walked through Buckhead on Sunday morning it looked like Tybee Island.

RIGHT!!

And Why are people acting like that was the only clubs/bar district in Atlanta. What about Lindbergh, peters street, crescent in midtown (AND ALL THE OTHER PLACES IN MIDTOWN AND DOWNTOWN), lil 5points...........

I don't know about the people on this forum but whenever I want to go out there are plenty of options to choose from.

and people from all over the south still come here to party. We are good in that department.

I agree. I have old classmates who visit atlanta quite frequently and they enjoy the nightlife (5 yrs and counting). Took them to EAV the last visit and I was surprised of the scenery. We walked to about four or five bars. Good diversed crowd. There were people everywhere outside. I moved here in the middle of closing buckhead village so I cant compare it to other districts. But I think the nightlife is cool.
