I thought a new developer had come in and canned that "Streets of Buckhead" idea.

It's about freakin' time! I've grown sick of seeing those same 3-4 rusty cranes over there feeling as though BV was razed for no apparent reason.

I think those buildings were razed for development but the recession hit and the original guy ran out of money.

Well, sort of arjay57. San Diego-based OliverMcMillan purchased the development from Carter last year and basically plans on the same type of mixed use project - just not quite as upscale and "Rodeo Drive" like as the original plans.

This was in the new Business Chronicle yesterday. They have pulled permits for the partial demolition of what has already been built. It sounds like they want to ensure that the exposed rebar in the parking decks is sound, among other small redesigns on what is already in place:

OliverMcMillan to demolish part of former Streets of Buckhead - Atlanta Business Chronicle

This is the marketing brochure from OliverMcMillan for the development. The site plans and renderings start on page 11: (warning - it's big, at 86.64 MB)

Yeah, I remember reading something to that affect a while back. They seem to have modified the vision to some extent, but honestly I assumed things would've been well underway long before now.

I'm just not happy with what they did. If you ever read anything by Jane Jacobs, this is exactly the wrong thing to do. City growth should be more organic and less planned, especially big projects like this. It crushed a lively organically grown thing and will replace it with a corporate controlled environment. Even a place like Atlantic Station feels more like a town-themed development, but there's still a strange sameness about it.

Jane Jacobs was a true visionary, but you can't turn back time. I'll take it - it would take decades to build up this area in an organic, piecemeal fashion.

This company has a pretty good track record. Check out their other developments on their website - I like them.

Obviously we can't bring it back. It was killed and like its formation, it would take a long time to return. A big difference in the two types of development is that the organic area can renew itself piecemeal but with a corporate development it will need a periodic complete redo.
