NC BBQ has a vinegar pepper sauce rather than a sweet sauce, and it is very hard to find here. Fat Matts has a decent pork sandwich, but I would like to find a place where I can find a pulled pork sandwich with that vinegar pepper sauce.

Good pork barbeque should not be served already sauced which is the problem down here. They can't cook it correctly so they cover it up with junk.
I make my own vinegar sauce. Apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, little bit of salt and red pepper flakes. No tomato in it.

I think most folks would say NC BBQ sauce is split eastern NC and western NC(perhaps Lexington is neutral ground). MOM grew up in Smithfield, NC(teen friend of Ava Gardner) but we kids grew up in Columbia, SC. I never had the vinegar pepper sauce until I was much older and I have to say it tastes good on coleslaw, but don't put it on my BBQ! Give me the Carolina Gold for pork and a tomato based sweet sauce for everything else. AND let ME put it on! The beans should be sweet as well. Actually, I prefer a sweet coleslaw if the meat sauce is too spicy. It's all about balance, donchaknow!

If the brisket needs sauce(shouldn't), might as well use A-1 or Heinz 57

Out here in Texas, I've tried carnitas as a substitute for pulled pork. It's cooked in fat(usually) but has orange juice added sometimes. If it is properly prepared, it needs NO sauce...and this comes from someone who ALWAYS puts sauce on pork. Different strokes, as they say.

And another vote for Swallow in the Hollow! In the old days, Hickory House(depending on location) and JR's served some passable BBQ; but I'm talking about the '80s- '90s or so.

The best I ever had was at a family gathering, years ago. My grandfather pit roasted one of his hogs-fresh off the pit hog is awesome!

My favorites BBQ in Atlanta is Fat Matt's Rib Shack on Piedmont Fat Matt's Rib Shack

The place is not much to look at but they execute their ribs to perfection.

That's the most God awful barbeque I've had...

can't vouch for JR's but i can confirm hickory house is no longer any good. the inspection score was 77 the last time i ate there several years ago, it was very run-down and i got the worst case of food poisoning i've ever had. it's a damned shame because they used to be decent.

My favorite intown spot for BBQ is Daddy Dz on Memorial Drive. It's a genuinely grungy shack (not a faux-shack like some places) with good food. Fox Bros is great but I got to where I just can't stand the crowds. Those guys need a second location.

If you're ever in the Brookhaven area, I highly recommend the pulled pork at Old Brick Pit BBQ on Peachtree. They have bottles of that vinegar pepper sauce (a darn good one) on the table and you can add it yourself. This certainly isn't an overal exemplary BBQ place, but I'm really impressed specifically with their pulled pork with the vinegar sauce. And their slaw is great.
