All the best places for BBQ I know of are in places where the average Georgia Tech student from suburbia would likely crap in his pants if he stood there for more than 2 minutes...in broad daylight.

Rib & BBQ shacks in the hood are THE BEST bar none; especially if you are on a budget.

Ms. Betty's House of Ribs - East Atlanta Village - Atlanta, GA

Wyatt's Diner - SGT Wyatt's Country BBQ - East Atlanta - Atlanta | Urbanspoon

Even knowing about these places is what separates the true urban Atlanta trekker from the wussy wannabes and pretenders who never stopped sucking their mothers' teats.

I make my own vinegar sauce. Apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, little bit of salt and red pepper flakes. No tomato in it.
Pig n Chik does not sauce their BBQ.

It's not bad, that's for sure.

But I still think the best bang for the buck for ribs is Fat Matts.
Fox Brothers has been open for 7 years. It's been popular pretty much that entire time.

Coming from Alabama I know great BBQ and these are the places that I think are tops in Atlanta. Of course the regional chain Jim N Nicks has a restaurant in Cumming. These few places come close to Full Moon BBQ in Birmingham.

Finally someone mentioned this great hole-in-the-wall place on the corner or Memorial Drive and Wyman Dr in Kirkwood. Great BBQ that is smoked on site, https://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&l...03484&t=m&z=19
Oh course, Fox Brothers BBQ!
And One Start Ranch in the Buckhead bar District, https://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&l...03484&t=m&z=19

Thanks, with Ms. Betty's you have totally added to my list of excuses to explore part of the city I haven't been to. That last pic on yelp of the ribs with the greens in the background.....

Looking forward to checking out Wyatts as well. I agree that some of the best places are in the not so welcoming parts of town.

BTW, totally disagree that Fox Bros is trendy, it is good BBQ and has been around for awhile. Old South BBQ in Smyrna has some rockin Bruswick Stew and you get a hug when you eat in

And for the record, I make the best BBQ I have ever had in Atlanta.

Fox Bros for Texas beef brisket. Daddy D'z for pulled pork. Williamson Brothers for chopped chicken.

Atlanta Magazine's July 2010 edition spotlighted the best BBQ joints in Atlanta. Some of them may closed since. But many like Ms Bettys and Wyatt's are still open, which are testament to the awesomeness of East Atlanta BBQ.

Happy Searching!

I prefer Fatt Matts'. Whenever anyone from out of town comes here, thats one of the first places I take them.

I don't like Slopes, so I say stay away. I want to try Fox Bros.

I am seriously surprised no one else has mentioned Heirloom. I guess no one else on here makes it out to Cobb County for bbq.
