"North Fulton municipalities may consider creating a separate tax collection authority from the county.

At this month’s North Fulton Municipal Association meeting, Roswell Mayor Jere Wood suggested forming an intergovernmental agreement for a joint tax collection service for Roswell, Alpharetta, Johns Creek, Sandy Springs, Milton and Mountain Park...

Johns Creek Mayor Mike Bodker said county tax problems have had significant impacts on some residents.

“I have gotten call after call after call from citizens who have really been in dire straits because of tax lien issues,” he said.

Wood said, “Fulton County does not work with anybody...”

I'm curious, and the piece doesn't address it: Would this be in lieu of, or in addition to, current FulCo taxes? Anyone know?

I am curious about this too. If in lieu of, would taxes for these residents be lower or higher?

From what I'm reading it has absolutely no effect on tax rates. It is merely the collection method. Fulton Co. would have 2 departments: one to the north and one to the south.

Okay...I guess I mis-read the article. So these counties just want to "collect" their own taxes, and then turn the collected funds over to Fulton?

I suspect this has to do with Arthur Ferdinand. In addition to collecting taxes for Fulton County, he collect taxes for the north Fulton cities, for which he charges an additional $200,000 a year in personal fees.

That makes Ferdinand the highest paid elected official in the state at $347,000 a year. (Compared to, say, $139,000 for the governor, $167,000 for a state Supreme Court justice, or $174,000 for a U.S. Senator).

Some people have complained about it.

I believe so, but the big question I had in my mind that you are touching on, is this just for city tax collection or city and county tax collection?

If the cities only collects their own millage they don't have their funds go through the county, but it would mean 2 tax bills (same combined rate).

If the cities collect both, they keep their portion and hand the county their portion.

Fulton tax chief may face pay cut | www.ajc.com

Thanks for the link. Good for Cobb and Gwinnett!

My problem with his remarks, as well as state law after reading this, if there are fees collected... they shouldn't go to the person in charge... they should go to that government office to pay for the cost of that gov't entity providing the service (in other words... the city should be paying the county to help collect their taxes, if they choose not to...not the elected official)
