Okay. Well speaking of hubs, I'm really contemplating staying loyal to Delta since this is the hub, or getting a United card and switching to them. All these new flights are going to make this airport busier and I don't want to be stuck in those long Delta check-in lines or when delays/cancellations happen. I know it's rare but it's starting to grate on me. And paying more for sky priority is out of my budget for now. I always see United flights less busy whether it's the check in counter or arrival flights. I was wondering if it's worth it.

Where you're going is a big deal about which airline to choose. United takes you nonstop to a lot of the biggest cities in the country (San Francisco, New York, DC, Chicago, Houston, Denver). Everything else, a layover. If you want to go to Mexico or Asia a lot, they've got an amazing network for that (way better than Delta's).

I have colleagues who were traveling to Mexico constantly and sick of Delta's mediocre-at-best Mexico network (which improved dramatically from yesterday's announcement) decide to switch to United. They said it's way easier to get upgrades on United, and they offered more perks than Delta for their highest tiers.

But, unless you're getting the highest tier, I would recommend simply being a free agent. Get a credit card like Chase that allows points to transfer to anybody. Pick the best airline/price for each itinerary. Upgrade to comfort or whatever when you need to. You'll save money and sanity in the long run.

Solid advice. I probably will just stick to my Chase points card because I'm not a frequent flier to make it all that worth it anyway. But good perspective to keep in mind if things change and I'm at my wit's end.

I've just heard so many negative things about United Airlines, as well as American, but that was about 5 years ago so maybe things have changed since then. I hope to travel to Japan again regularly and I've looked at flying JAL, which I know is codeshared with AA.

Although lately I've been finding myself flying a lot of Star Alliance airlines which United is part of, including LOT, Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian, and Turkish Airlines.

It would be nice to get Swiss Air or JAL, back in ATL. What's preventing Emirates from starting service here?

Delta’s seasonal Atlanta-Rio de Janeiro flight is going to year round.

https://news.delta.com/6-new-routes-...one-year-joint

This was always funny to me as a seasonal route. I went to Rio in southern winter and it was beautiful.

Qatar Airlines already comes to Atlanta and offers similar connectivity. I wonder if Delta has ever flown (or considered flying) to Dubai.

There's only a handful of airlines that are not Delta, Southwest, Spirit, or Frontier in ATL. The other American carriers pretty much only fly to hub cities. American/American Eagle flies to Charlotte, Chicago O'Hare, Dallas, Miami, Philly, Phoenix, and DC National while United has flights to Chicago, Denver, Houston, Newark, SFO, and DC-Dulles. Alaska currently just has flights to Seattle but as mentioned earlier, will start flights to San Diego next year which is also a hub. Meanwhile JetBlue has flights to both NYC airports, Boston, and Fort Lauderdale.

Here's a list of all the current foreign carriers that fly to ATL:

- Air Canada - Toronto and Montreal
- Air France - Paris CDG
- British Airways - London Heathrow
- Copa Airlines - Panama City
- Ethiopian Airlines - Addis Ababa
- KLM - Amsterdam
- Korean Air - Seoul
- LATAM Peru - Lima
- Lufthansa - Frankfurt
- Qatar Airways - Doha
- Turkish Airlines - Istanbul
- Virgin Atlantic - London Heathrow and Manchester
- WestJet - Calgary, Vancouver, and Winnipeg

Aeromexico will start service back up next year as mentioned earlier.

Yeah, it would be nice to have at least one JAL flight from Tokyo. Probably better from Narita since Delta flies to Haneda. JAL flies to pretty much every major US city from either Narita or Haneda or both including LAX, SFO, Seattle, San Diego, DFW, Chicago, New York, Boston, and of course Honolulu. Surprisingly JAL doesn't fly to DC but ANA does and to some of the other cities mentioned, mainly the United hubs.

I have to say, I know people love to crap on Spirit because their cousin had a bad experience on them 12 years ago….

But they have been amazing out of ATL. When the big 3 carriers were all price gouging at $600 a ticket for me to fly home to the twin cities last Xmas….little ole Spirit charged us about $150/ticket. Same this year. Always pleasant employees, mostly newer planes, and because it’s a la carte I don’t have to worry about the bev cart hitting my broad shoulders 3X, or a bunch of delays from people trying to stuff overhead bins.

The spirit card is the only credit card I have, and with nominal spending my family easily gets 5-10 tickets free/year. Just booked them to Puerto Rico!

All I’m saying, is if you haven’t tried them because of a decade old horror story, they are different now, and paying an extra $300/ticket isn’t worth the free Coke delta gives you. Maybe that’s just me…
