SAT scores flat in Georgia, nation. Too few kids taking... | Get Schooled | www.ajc.com

US average: 1498 out of 2400 or 1010 out of 1600
Our state's average: 1452 out of 2400 or 977 out of 1600

How do student's SAT scores at Georgia's colleges and universities stack up? (note these scores are out of 1600)
Hmm

Students who get a 1550 or higher are more likely to attend and do well in college.

Not sure about the higher-level courses, but I know in some parts of the country (my experience is with Connecticut schools), that the majority of students took at least one prep-class and many parents spent hundreds if not thousands of dollars on tutors and classes designed to help with PSATs, SATs and ACTs as well as SAT2s. That helps boost the scores a couple of points at least.

Not sure if this is the norm in Georgia.

Well, we can't say that everyone in Con does that. It varies by family. Obviously a family barely making ends meet isn't going to spend so much on prep courses. In Johns Creek/Alpharetta, GA kids regularly go to top tier schools like harvard. I think that county has the highest SAT score in the state.

So variations exist. That's why we're looking at averages. What and how is the average student doing? Not how is the bottom 10% or top 10% doing

I'd expect northern states to have better scores than southern.

This year Forsyth has scored the highest. But I wonder why Pope high school is not on the list?

On the list, it is listed as Alan C. Pope High School.

Go towards the top.

Meh ... Who cares? I'm so tired of hearing this same story year after year. We all know the SAT is flawed. As a journalist, I can assure you this is a NON story. It only makes the news because consumers have come to expect it (and demand it). It's no different than reporting crime stats --- FLAWED METHODOLOGY, FLAWED DATA, FLAWED CONCLUSIONS!

^ How is the SAT flawed? The claim of the SAT's irrelevance seems to be based mostly on dissatisfaction with the results.

The only flaw I can see is that not all students in every state take it. So in a state like Georgia with a high participation rate, the average will be lower.

Ugh. Not everyone needs to go to a 4 year school. GA has too many students taking the SAT and not enough taking vocational type courses.

for what it is worth, four of these schools have either admission and/or continuance requirements (GSMST can't have admission requirements, but course pathway leads to a fairly self selecting student body.)

Four of the schools are in N. Fulton -- which speaks to the fact that those schools as well as E. Cobb are still pretty darn strong.
