Ant! This is good news for many of the GSU students and others that might move downtown. I distinctly remember one of the first times I saw you on these forums it was about Downtown's lack of a grocery store, while Midtown had them. Some progress, right?
Yep! I knew it would come but I actually thought it be sooner.

So apparently Walkscore ranks Atlanta 3rd in the South for public transportation.
Nowhere is Dallas in the top three according to Walkscore

But hey I guess Walkscore is just another Atlanta booster.....

So a grocery store chain is in talks to come to underground. I'm telling you
guys now like I said before. Atlanta's
downtown is about to blow up.
This made me laugh out loud.
Thanks for the chuckle
(woo! grocery store opening! boomtown a-comin'!)

You do realize that the excitement isn't just about a grocery store, but what it portends for Underground and Downtown as a whole, yeah?

I'm guessing not.

No, it doesn't, but why phrase it so negatively. Why not ask, "Who has the best downtown in the South?"

I actually like Midtown ATL at night. Downtown, sorry....still has light years of catching up to do. NOLA, Savannah, Greenville, Chattanooga...all have better downtowns.

I later talked to people from Atlanta and they said Midtown and Buckhead was really good but i was disappointed in those two areas too. Midtown sorta felt it was built in the 80's/90's and sorta was a cross between a downtown and office park. It didn't really work and there were so few people on the streets. It felt like a ghost town during a weekday. Buckhead felt light a series of strip malls but with rail access. Like King of Prussia back home.

Is there some other urban area that people work/shop/go to because these areas totally didnt cut it for me. I have been to Dallas, Charlotte, Houston, NOLA, and others. I honestly thought that Atlanta had the worst downtown and that Midtown/Buckhead were poor substitutes compared to other places.

Please dont shoot the messenger. I hope its getting better downtown but it doesnt take a rocket scientist to know that Downtown Atlanta is not pulling its weight for such a large and prosperous region.
I can understand what you are saying, enough not be a defensive bully about it. Atlanta is a slow and sleepy city. It is very peaceful to live in Atlanta. Sorry you didnt have a nice time though. Hope you visit again. Philadelphia is a really great city. Atlanta needs a couple more decades before you can compare to an excellent city such as Philadelphia. I appreciate you coming down to visit though.

The original post is probably not still applicable after 2 years...downtown has changed quite a bit since then, but even then it wasn't as bad as that person made it out to be. I think our downtown is pretty cool. I love the historic buildings and urban feel - and it certainly is not dead by any stretch of the imagination. I'm sure it can seem that way from time to time, but most of the time there are plenty of people walking around.
