This project has been discussed some in other threads such as this: //www.city-data.com/forum/atlan...2013-a-46.html But since this really is a separate (but connected) project (and that last thread is titled "2013") it deserves it's own thread.

Current update on the progress here: Dirt, Backhoes & Indie Music: Take A Video Tour of PATH400 - Trail Talk - Curbed Atlanta

Quote:
The first of the project's seven phases is the half-mile stretch from Lenox Road at Tower Place to Old Ivy Road that's shown in the video. Lane closures on Lenox Road will start next month, but this phase is expected to be completed well before the holiday madness begins. Phase 2, which will run from Old Ivy Road to West Wieuca, will start later in the summer with a goal of being completed by next spring.

Previous information: Buckhead's Answer To Beltline Will Break Ground This Month - Parks & Recreation - Curbed Atlanta

Quote:
Great news for multi-use trail zealots: The first phase of PATH400, a Beltlineian trail that will wend for 5.2 miles through Buckhead parallel to Ga. 400, is set to break ground Feb. 17. Officials are hoping the path will lend Buckhead the same sense of interconnectedness the Beltline's Eastside Trail has provided neighborhoods east of downtown and Midtown. "PATH400 will be a tremendous asset," Jim Durrett, executive director of Buckhead CID, said in a press release. "Our community will enjoy new pedestrian access to schools and the local business district, opportunities for outdoor recreation and a greater sense of connectedness. It's a wise investment for Buckhead." PATH400's first phase will be a half-mile stretch from Lenox Road at Tower Place up to Old Ivy Road. Extensions could soon follow.

ditto! Love the pictures!

I have been excited about this project, even though it has gotten very little fanfare compared to the Beltline.

Green space is what makes urban living Buckhead unappealing and this is exactly what the Buckhead/Lindbergh area needs.

I'm officially annoyed. Whose idea was it to put a wonderful bikeway along the freaking highway? Who wants to ride a bike alongside ppl driving at 70-80 miles per hour possibly texting or dialing? What small children can be reasonably taken for a ride on their bikes/tricycles here? Who wants to inhale all of the freaking carbon dioxide or whatever it is called, exhaust fumes, from the tons of cars on 400 daily? WTH? All of this grass in Buckhead and we couldn't have a regular trail in a parklike setting? Come on. Who thought this was a good use of money?

The rail is not in the GA 400 right of way, but in the woods beside the trail. There is also good separation in elevation between the trail and GA 400. If you look at the construction video (link above) you can see that in the segment they are building now the trail is much higher than GA 400. Other segments will be lower than the road, protected by the sound barrier

It may not be a perfect suburban park setting, but it is great for an urban park, and better than many segments of the Beltine!

Did you even look at the pictures? Most of the trail will be behind the sound barriers and/or up on a hill from the high. Would be pretty difficult or next to impossible to get run over.

What grass? Where else could they have put this? Especially with the high land prices...

I don't get what's the big deal with the location.

It is a mostly grade-separated multi-use trail going through already built urban and suburban areas, some of which have historical status.... Some parts of it are going to be along side existing barriers that help it be separated.

Barriers to utilize are typically railroads, freeways, and rivers. It is great when it can be a river. It is great when it can be a rail to trails project, but those aren't always options.

This project is great for so many reasons and there are really no other corridors to utilize without crossing many other barriers or public streets.

No one cares because it's Buckhead. Plus you're not going through cool, hip neighborhoods and getting great views of the skyline.

Only part of it is going along the highway.

But I agree, close 400 to cars so it can be for trees, walkers, and bikers only. (Thats what you were going for, right?)
