I guess I don't see it. There are segments between Rocky Ford and Inman Park MARTA where there is like 2-3 feet between the tracks and the road. How does a 10' bike path fit through there, while still having two travel lanes, a center turn lane, and a sidewalk on the other side, without encroaching into private property to the north? The entire "it'll flow better, promise" argument falls apart entirely if you don't have a center turn lane. That'll be the first thing to get axed to accommodate bikes, even though it's been one of the central pillars of how this entire project has been justified.

Protected left turn lane only at signalized intersections.

Have they done anything to mollify the bike lane opponents? As I recall a lot of folks on the East side were up in arms about giving a lane to bicycles.

Nope. It's more of a pee on their leg and tell them it's raining kinda thing. The Atlanta Bicycle Coalition is well organized, vocal, and been pushing members to turn out for public input meetings to drown out dissenting voices. They'll get their bike lanes and the expense of cars, gloat about it, and then never use it. Just like Ponce. Unfortunately there isn't an Atlanta Car Commuter Coalition to generate some push-back. Concerns are dismissed, and support is gospel.

I have zero problem with de-incentivizing the use of cars. Interestingly enough, the proposal for DeKalb would actually help drivers by adding a center turn lane, which is badly needed.

The Ponce project was a GDOT safety and operational improvement plan that removed 2 general travel vehicle lanes, and installed a center turn lane. The remaining pavement on the ROW was not enough for more vehicle lanes, but would allow a buffered bike lane. Under GDOTs Complete Street program, they are dedicated to creating Complete Streets where applicable; see Peachtree Rd.

If folks want a bike lane let the have it. Shift more of the E-W auto traffic onto McLendon and Hosea Williams.

Whatever they are going to do with DeKalb I wish they'd get on with it.
