A friend of mine been living in the Atlanta area for about a year. Originally he from Baltimore and relocated to the ATL for a job opportunity. I haven't seen him for months but he returned to Baltimore to attend a family reunion happening sometime this week. I asked him "how is life in Atlanta"? his response was the metro area is nice, a lot of things to do, and the traffic is horrible blah blah blah, which is a typical complaint from drivers in every city. Then I asked him "are the people in the ATL cool? he laughed and said he met a lot of transplants and natives there but most people (mostly black women and men) act so bougie like people living in the area are fighting to be somebody important. He think the entertainment industry down there might have something to do with it. Instead of being called black Mecca or Black Hollywood, it should be called the "Bougie Black Mecca".

I never been there but do you think Atlanta the black bougie meeca?

No. That title goes to DC's college educated crowd that talks about work while at happy hours. They also go out at night to The Park in their Steve Harvey suit standing around trying to look important. Before they ask for you name they ask "So what do you do?"

He either has been watching too many reality shows or doesnt know where to go. Atlanta nightlife is too diverse. Look for yourself. Here is a list of weekly nightlife events for Atlanta. Does this look 100% bougie to you? (Link at the bottom)

He might meant bougie as in everyone here is on the grind. Atlanta is a hustling city meaning everyone is either trying to start a business, inventing something, in the entertainment industry, etc which is generally true.

We do have those crowds that he is talking about but its so many other crowds to hang around that it doesnt matter because Atlanta has plenty of social circles to choose from. It might seem that way since he is new to the city but once he really gets to know the city in a couple of years he will think differently. He is on the outer layer now but once he peels off a couple layers off the onion he will see the other side

Also since our COL is cheaper we have more money to spend on a house or a nice car or clothes. People in the average big city have several roommates because the COL is so high and they are driving a Fred Flintstone car because they are broke. Generally speaking

Bougie is slang for bourgeois, typically pronounced "BOO-zhee". And no one knows how to spell it right lol.

And to the OP, there is certainly a "bougie" faction among blacks here, but they are in the minority. TRUST ME. Also as afdinatl said, our cost of living is lower so these people generally have a little more money to flaunt and act like they're doing so well.

A wealthy human being who looks down on another person lifestyle because of financial limitations or differences in a condescending manner. Also people who thinks certain venues, products, neighborhoods, clothing, vehicles, or activities are beneath them.

LOL, well I can't speak for everyone in the DMV area but me being from Baltimore, not everyone around the DC suburbs talk about work during happy hour. I would say the metro area is very transient so it really depends on where you at. When you talk to a person from the DMV, most likely they talk about what's happening around there community like they building condos, apartments, houses, department stores, hotels, and businesses here and there, any events going on in the area, sports teams in the city, and gossiping about people they see or know.

I don't know what he watch on television but he said he does go out sometimes to parties or events going on during the day or night around the city and I guess whenever he go out he view some of the people he around having bougie attitudes.
