"Bread and Circuses" syndrome. FWIW, this is a staple of American pro sports.

Braves have 81 home games to sell. And pro teams have no pageantry to lure fans, i.e. "I went to school here in this building", "this is where I met my wife" .... I heard those stories every single game-day Saturday in Athens growing up.

The Dawgs weren't great in the 70s, but my parents couldn't wait to drive 3 hrs to Athens on fall Saturdays to go back to UGA, visit the campus, tailgate, and watch the games. And then when Herschel came along in 1980, fall trips back to the UGA campus became positively glorious.
I went to grad school at Kentucky and we were dreadful at football and we still drew great crowds and sold out most of our games. TN has sucked in football for 7 years and sell out ever game 100k strong. Nothing beats SEC football, fans are so loyal its incredible.

When the Braves blow games like they did Tuesday night, who wants to go, pay for tickets, and suffer thru the heartbreak.

The Braves have 48 wins and 60 loses. I'm pretty sure this is the reason why. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure this out

I was there with you. At least those of us who did show had the place to ourselves.

The lack of any real "popular" players outside of Freeman and maybe Simmons isn't helping. Nobody has kids who are bugging their parents to go to a game so they can see Chris Johnson or AJ Pierzynski play. With Chipper and McCann and Gattis and Kimbrel, you had a lot bigger rooting interest for particular players. With so much team turnover, it's tough to get invested in the "story" of a player . . . most of them are new, and half of those new guys will be gone again next year.

While the performance of the Braves is clearly a main driver of lower attendance, it should also be noted that MLB is going to continue to have attendance issues because the average American today has additional options and preferences. The MLS is and will continue to be a driving force of lower MLB attendance across the country.

People do have more options these days. The Braves are smart to go for a downsized stadium that is part of overall mixed use development.

They'll downsize the seating, but add more luxury boxes.
