Last year, GDOT finally completed construction on the new interchange at GA 20/GA 124, and work continues on the new interchange at Collins Hill Road. Traffic in that area flows much better than ever did before, and now there's even more good news: over the next 10 years, GDOT plans to gradually upgrade most of the rest of GA 316 to a limited-access highway. It'll start next year when ground is broken for a new interchange at GA 81 near Winder. Here's the schedule for the major projects:

2017: GA 81 interchange
2018: GA 53 interchange
2020: GA 11 and Patrick Mill Road interchanges
2022: U.S. 29/Winder Highway interchange
2023: Oconee Connector interchange
2024: GA 10 Loop/Epps Bridge Parkway and Harbins Road interchanges
2026: GA 211 interchange
After 2026: Drowning Creek Road, Barber Creek Road and Jimmy Daniel Road interchanges

Eventually I'd like to see GDOT widen the highway to six lanes with full interior and exterior shoulders, plus two Peach Pass lanes from I-85 to Harbins Road. It needs to be widened to better handle traffic during football season. I also hope that the reconstruction of the interchange with GA 10 Loop involves ramps with multiple lanes, including a flyover from the "inner" Loop to GA 316 westbound. The pace of the projects seems kind of slow, but at least they're finally doing something about it now.

For seven games per year? Absolutely not.

They could run special game-day trains if the state would bother getting its act together on non-road based transportation.

Not to say that this isn't a project that's needed, I really don't know enough to say if it is or not, but I would like to similar effort put into rail-based transit to Athens as part of the commuter and regional network.

The Brain Train. That idea has been tossed around before.

Yes, I am well aware of it haha. Athens built their Multi-Modal Transit Center with commuter rail approach and platforms in mind for it. All I'm saying is that we should be doing that, as well as highways.

You are right, we are talking about a program that has only won 1 NC and continually under-performs even when it has talent. They are well worth the billions to expand a highway and encourage more sprawl.

I'm all for it. The interchange at 316/20 provided major relief and I am sure that the interchange with 81 will do the same. It is not as painful as the one at 20 was before construction, but that area has definitely been gaining more people and cars.

I agree that 316 should be limited-access all the way into Athens if possible. Although a lot of people discourage "sprawl", the writing is already on the wall in some areas. Even if 316 never becomes limited-access all the way through, people are already moving to Barrow, Oconee, Walton (not on 316, but just off of it), and Athens-Clarke and will continue to do so.

I am not a die-hard UGA fan, but I can acknowledge that they still bring over 92K inside of the stadium and countless others outside of it. I think the 316 construction actually more to do with the areas that it runs through on the way to Athens than with football traffic.
