We have young kids (ages 2 - 5) and are trying to find a synogouge that has a lot of programs for young familes. We live in another city and are moving to Atlanta. Our current synogouge is very large and has weekly Friday night family services. Any suggestions for us? We are ok with a reform or conservative synogouge. Our real preference is to find one that is very welcoming to new families and caters to young families. Please let us know which ones are good in East Cobb and Alpharetta.

Thanks!

Here's a listing of all metro Atlanta synagogues:

And here's a little history on the Jewish community of Atlanta:

Hi again,

I just responded to another one of your posts re: Alpharetta v. Marietta. I too am Jewish and can give you the scoop on the synagogues in the area as well.

You should give me a call and pick my brain on everything...I have a feeling we have a lot in common.

To answer your question...we don't belong to a temple right now. My kids attend Sunday school and summer camp at Chabad. Don't freak out, it isn't your typical Chabad. I'm actually (extremely) reform but this Chabad is non-judgemental and completely inclusive. It acts more like an outreach program for jewish families in the area. Many reform jews go to this Chabad, you'd be very surprised.

We chose to quit the reform temple because we felt that they only had their hands out for more money (you know, the typical stuff...building fund, etc.). I understand that they need the money but there are tactful ways of asking.

We went with Chabad because there is no pressure to give donations, they don't charge a membership fee and it's around the corner (literally, within walking distance) to our home. Many people go to the camp there (all levels of judiasm) because the kids have a blast.

I'm so not trying to convert/pressure you but just explaining where we're coming from.

There are a few local temples you can check out:
reform= Dor Tamid (currently in Duluth but building in Johns Creek, formally Alpharetta)
conservative = Gesher L'Torah (on Kimball Bridge Rd in Alpharetta, minutes to The Falls)
reform = Beth Tikvah (Roswell, not far from Alpharetta)
conservative (I think) = Kehillat Chaim (Roswell too)
reform = Temple Emanu'el (Dunwoody)

Hope this helps!

Wink actually

that sounds like a pretty typical Chabad unless you're in N. Miami Beach.
Anyway I just want to alert the OP to Beth Hallel in Roswell. This is a "Messianic" "synagogue" so just FYI. They've been there for over 20 years and aren't going anyplace. They have lots of "outreach" programs. The "rabbi's" son ran for political office a couple of years ago so they are pretty high profile. I'm sure you will hear about it and get a big sell that may not be totally clear on who they are. They have their own facility so if you were to go there, you would be walking into a "synagogue" for all appearances. Again, just FYI.
